Not as Smart as Auntie Ally
Allison loves the poem "The Owl and the Pussycat" by Edward Lear. She likes to hear it every night at bedtime, and she likes to recite it too. Because she likes the poem so much, sometimes she asks about the poet. We once looked him up on line and learned that he was the 20th child in his family. There was also an odd picture of him in what looked like pajamas, so she calls him "Edward Lear, 20th child, pajama man."
Last night at bedtime:
A: Do you know another poem by Edward Lear that you could tell me?
Me: No, but we can look it up on the Internet. I don't know any others by heart.
A: Oh. 'Cause you're a little smart, but you're not THAT smart?
Me: No! I'm smart. I just don't know any more of his poems.
A: Well, do you know science?
Me: Yes.
A: ALL science?
Me: No.
A: The Auntie Ally kind of science?
Me: No. (She is a Ph.D. in astrophysics).
A: Well, do you know how to spell "apple"?
Me: Yes!
A: Do you know what month is coming next?
Me: Yes!
A: Well do you know when it's going to be July?
Me: Yes - it already is July.
A: Well do you know when it's going to be September?
Me: Yes!
A: Well do you know all of everything?
Me: No. But no one does. People know different things. Even Auntie Ally. She knows more than me about science, but I know more than she does about business.
A: Because you work?
Me: Well she works too. She teaches science to college students. So she works on different things than I do.
A: Oh. But you know more about Coca-Cola?
Me: Right.
